You are about to take one step that you have never stepped before. The path in front of you gets shorter with every movement forward, as the trail behind you grows longer with each memory created. It is a journey, an uncharted voyage that demands your ability to step forward with purpose, courage, and faith. Many, when faced with this path, lose their footing and fall to their defeat, overwhelmed by uncertainty and fear. Yet, a select few find strength in the process, gaining resilience as they continue to make progress. These are the people who inspire us to keep moving, even when the path ahead is unclear.
Exploring and Vision
Consider the early explorers. They ventured into the unknown with little more than a vision and a determination to see what lay beyond the horizon. They had no maps to guide them or guarantees of success, only their unwavering belief in the mission that propelled them forward. Their courage and willingness to take those first steps into uncharted territories forever shaped the course of human history.
I recently had a profound conversation with a friend about this very idea of exploration and vision. They shared a fascinating story about a Hawaiian wayfinder, a skilled navigator who traveled by canoe from Hawaii to Fiji using nothing but the stars, ocean currents, and the patterns of the water as their guides. Imagine that for a moment: traveling over 2,000 miles across the open ocean, relying solely on intuition, skill, and trust in the natural elements.
At one point, the wayfinder’s mentor asked them a seemingly simple yet deeply profound question: “Do you see the island you are trying to reach?” This wasn’t a question about physical sight—after all, the island was far beyond the visible horizon. Instead, it was about seeing with the mind’s eye, envisioning the destination clearly and with conviction. It was about tapping into the intuitive, vision-driven mind that propels us forward even when the destination feels impossibly far away.
Era of Slowing & Uncertainty
This story speaks to the core of what it means to be willing. We live in an era where innovation has slowed, where people often expect the comforts and entitlements of modern life to come easily. Companies and governments alike face existential questions about their future, grappling with challenges that demand creative, bold solutions.
In this moment of uncertainty, the world requires people who are willing—willing to step into the unknown, to embrace challenges, and to push beyond the limits of what feels comfortable or safe.
But what does it truly mean to be willing?
Being Willing
To be willing is to embrace the unknown with an open heart and a curious mind. It is a readiness to act, even when you don’t have all the answers. It is a commitment to take the first step, trusting that clarity will come with movement.
For me, this idea of being willing has been a recurring theme throughout my life. Time and time again, I have found myself at the threshold of uncharted adventures, faced with the choice to either step forward into uncertainty or retreat into the safety of the familiar. Each time, I’ve had to ask myself the same question: Am I willing?
Often, my mind would race ahead, imagining the thousands of steps that might lie ahead. This forecasting—this habit of mentally skipping ahead—would trigger fear and lead me to focus on mitigating risks rather than embracing possibilities.
But I’ve learned something powerful over the years: When I focus solely on the first step—the single, deliberate action required of me in the present moment—it opens the door to entirely new possibilities. That first step, small as it may seem, is the key to unlocking progress.
As we stand on the edge of an unknown future, I believe this concept of willingness will be critical. Together, I hope we can explore what it means to cultivate a spirit of willingness. Over the next year, I plan to learn, experience, and write more about this theme. My goal is to understand how we can develop the courage to take the first step and the perseverance to keep stepping forward, no matter what lies ahead.
Being willing is more than a mindset—it’s a way of life. And as we move forward into the unknown, I believe it will be our willingness that determines whether we merely survive or truly thrive.
Let us step boldly into the adventure that lies around the bend.
